We all want to stay as far away from it as possible but sometimes it happens to the best of us. Maybe you were feeling a little too tired or maybe it was the fault of other drivers around you. The most important part however is what happens after it.
What are the steps you should be doing when you find yourself in a car accident? Here are the things you should do.
It makes sense to freak out when you have just been hit however panicking is only going to make things worse for you. When an accident happens, the first thing you should do is to take a deep breath. Check yourself for any injuries.
If you are not injured, proceed to check your surroundings. How bad was the accident? Is your car damaged? Are there any other person that is injured? Once you have identified the extend of the damage, decide whether you should dial the ambulance or not. On the other hand, if you are injured, dial the emergency number which is 999.
Push Your Car Aside
If the accident is not as bad and you are still able to move your car, drive it to the emergency lane and turn your emergency light on. Sorting things out after an accident will require some time and leaving your car in the middle of the lane is not only going to slow traffic down but you are also putting yourself in danger of being hit again.
Take down important information
Whether or not the accident is your fault or the fault of another driver, you will want to take down several important information. You will need the name of the driver, a copy of their IC or Passport, their contact details, their car registration, make and model as well as pictures of the damaged area.
This will be essential information to have for when you are making a police report and insurance claim.
Make a Police Report
In order for you or the other involved driver to make an insurance claim, you must first file a police report at a Police Station that is nearest to the incident. Note that Police reports must be done in a certain area. For example, if the accident happened while you are driving in Penang, you can’t wait until you go back to KL and file a police report at a KL police station.
Make necessary calls
If the car you are driving is not under your name, you will want to inform the owner. If you are still young, you might want to inform your parents. If the accident is going to cause you to be late for work, you will want to call your Boss. On the other hand, if your car needs to be towed, you will need to either call your insurance company or a tow truck before arranging alternate transportation for yourself.
Remember to inform your loved ones to let them know that you are safe and most importantly, remain calm because panicking is not going to help you get through an accident.
