The all-new BMW X4 has officially been launched in Malaysia and will be available for viewing and test-drives at authorised BMW showrooms nationwide from this weekend. Priced from RM380,000 (without insurance), the new model will, like the preceding model, be assembled at BMW’s facility within the Inokom plant in Kedah.
“The BMW X4 broke new ground when it was first introduced in 2014 as a Sports Activity Coupe. Its forward-thinking design challenged the status quo with strength and versatility capable of conquering every terrain. With powerful new proportions and increased agility, the All-New BMW X4 will continue to break boundaries and deliver the thrills of driving a BMW,” said Harald Hoelzl, MD of BMW Group Malaysia.
200,000 units sold globally
He added that globally, the BMW Group delivered over 200,000 units of the X4 since it was unveiled in 2014 and Malaysia had the opportunity to assemble the model at the BMW Assembly Facilities in Kulim, Kedah. Local assembly of the second generation further demonstrates BMW Group Malaysia’s commitment to growing its investments in Malaysia.
The new X4 has a coupe-like roofline, athletic curves and distinct M Sport characteristics. Muscular, flared wheel housings accentuate the character of a vehicle. Besides the distinctive M Sport aerodynamic features, there are 20-inch M Double-spoke wheels, and M Sport Brakes.
The three-dimensional design of the larger BMW kidney grille conveys a stronger presence than before. Adaptive LED headlights with high beam assistant flank the long bonnet. The low windscreen has acoustic glass fitted to reduce wind noise, while the Cd of 0.30 means good aerodynamic efficiency. The rear quarters are especially distinctive, defined by an extremely athletic shoulder area as well as the slim, wrap-around tail lights with their three-dimensional styling.
Longer and wider
The second generation has sportier proportions with an increased length of 4752 mm (+ 81 mm) and width of 1918 mm (+ 37 mm). Its wheelbase is now 2864 mm (+ 54 mm) but the lower roofline has been dropped by 3 mm to 1621 mm.
Powering the X4 is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine which produces 252 bhp/350 Nm to give a claimed top speed of 240km/h after sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Power delivery to the 4 wheels is via an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with a Launch Control function.
Better agility with modified chassis
The modified chassis is said to provide even better agility. The higher percentage of light-weight aluminium and high-strength steel components has reduced the vehicle’s weight by up to 50 kgs and its centre of gravity is now even lower than before. Benefiting from an almost perfect 50/50 front/rear weight distribution, the X4 more balanced handling and significantly improved ride comfort.
Standard equipment for the vehicle includes xDrive all-wheel drive, Adaptive Suspension, Variable Sport Steering, electronic differential lock, Hill-Start Assistant, Hill Descent Control along with Performance Control that distributes engine and braking control to the individual wheels when turning.
Inside, the new X4 has electroplated trim details for the controls and a larger free-standing 10.25-inch Navigation System Professional with Touch Sensitive Control Display, complete with BMW ConnectedDrive.
There’s also a full-colour Head-Up Display in addition to a high-resolution 12.3-inch Multifunctional Instrument Display with Black-Panel Technology. The advanced Voice Control system has also been improved to follow instructions phrased in natural language.
More luxury features
Features previously offered in luxury sedans only are now also available for the X4. These include the exquisite Vernasca Leather upholstery in Tacora Red and a three-zone air conditioning system with separate controls for the rear seats. An interior highlight of the vehicle is the large Panorama Glass Roof that makes the cabin appear brighter and more spacious for a luxurious ambience.
