Audi’s Q cars started with the Q7 in 2006 as the first SUV from the German carmaker. Over 13 years, the range has expanded with additional models as new segments began appearing in the market. The Q2 is at the bottom end, size-wise, with the Q8 at the top and the Q3 and Q5 in between.

A new number
While Audi could have used one of the existing models as the basis for an electric drive concept under the e-tron umbrella (like the RS Q3, SQ2 and SQ5), it has chosen instead a yet unused digit in the Q range, perhaps to emphasise the major powertrain difference that will underline Audi’s product development in the next decade.

With the Q4 e-tron concept that it will showcase next month in Geneva, Audi will show what it is working on for a compact SUV with electric drive. A production model is expect to go on sale in late 2020 or early 2021.
